Every Tuesday, we will be picking one of our original songs, and telling the story behind the music!!!  This week, we explore PJ's love for animals in TORTOISE!!

    I love wildlife.

I was watching a gopher tortoise making his way up a hill by a nearby pond. I remember he stopped for awhile and seemed to watch some birds flying overhead. It was like he was thinking about flying. Well, that's what I imagined. I gave him a voice. Humans can't be the only ones to dream and hope, right?

I think the message in this song is something we all feel. A little envy, moments of despair, a glimmer of hope, and then the determination to keep moving forward.

Phil took my first few chords that I had fleshed out, and helped create this amazing song. He sculpted my lyrics to fit the music and really tried to capture the mood. I'm so proud of this song. It's one of my favorites to play. I hope you like it too!

Tortoise | Written by PJ Cruz and Phil Cruz

Do you see me down here walking, never slowing down
I am the tortoise and I pace here on the ground
See my friends with wings that mock me from the sky
Much like the cicada, one day I'll molt and fly

I am love life and hate in a shell on the ground
The silence of my truth is enough to combat their sound
I walk here quietly a watchful eye below
Step after step is all I'll ever know

So some glide, others soar, I relentlessly move on
I trudge a monotonous trail and they tease me with their song
No harm in keeping the dream that I take wing among the birds
Until then I stare up blankly and call without words

I am love, life, and hate in a shell on the ground
The silence of my truth is enough to combat their sound
I walk here quietly, a watchful eye below
Step after step is all I'll ever know

No harm keeping the dream I take wing among the birds
Until then I stare up blankly and call without words

I am love, life, and hate in a shell on the ground
The silence of my truth is enough to combat their sound
I walk here quietly, a watchful eye below
Step after step is all I'll ever know
